Interview: Ramifications of the Kurdish Independence Referendum

October 2, 2017
WBEZ 91.5 Chicago

I was a guest on the NPR affiliate WBEZ 91.5 Chicago to discuss the ramifications of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq's referendum on independence with Worldview's host, Jerome McDonnell.
WBEZ Chicago | Steve Bynum, Jerome McDonnell -- About two months after Iraq’s army took back the northern city of Mosul from the Islamic State, Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region went to the polls to vote on independence from the country.
Both the Iraqi and U.S. governments declared the vote — which took place on September 25, 2017 — illegitimate. Iran and Turkey, with significant Kurdish populations, also opposed the measure. Kurdish officials said that nearly 93 percent of voters supported the referendum to establish a separate Kurdish state.
We discuss the ramifications of the referendum for Iraq and the Middle East with Goran Zaneti, a Kurdish American and independent journalist on Middle East affairs. Zaneti is currently producing a documentary on Kurdish refugees stuck on the Turkish-Syria border called Resistance is Life.

This week, I made a guest appearance on CGTN America's program, The Heat, with Anand Naidoo to discuss the referendum in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and its implications. I was part of a panel discussion that included former Turkish MP Aykan Erdemir, Kurdistan-based media Rudaw's Namo Abdulla, and former Iraq Defense Attache to the US, Ismael Alsodani. The program touched on the Kurdistan referendum, the prospects of Kurdish independence, and the position of the regional powers as well as the central government in Baghdad.
